Policewoman shot dead in robbery

A female police officer has been shot dead and another seriously injured as they responded to an armed robbery in the centre of Bradford.
The gunmen are still at large, with surrounding roads closed and dozens of armed police patrolling the area in an effort to track them down.

The officers were called to Morley Street at 1525 GMT to deal with a robbery at a travel agent.

Members of staff at the family-run business were assaulted and cash taken.

One eyewitness told BBC News the robbery was at Universal Express travel agent.

'Shocked and saddened'

It is thought the officer who died was in her mid-30s and may have been a "probationer" - of less than two years' service.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he was "shocked and saddened".

He added: "While incidents of this sort are mercifully rare, they serve to remind us of the risks and dangers police officers face every day in their work to uphold the law and protect the public."

Councillor Khadam Hussain, whose ward covers the area where the shooting happened, said he was shocked by the officer's death.

He said: "It is appalling. I really feel for the family. It is shocking. This is a business area with a lot of restaurants and takeaways. It is not the kind of area you expect this to happen.

"I will be arranging meetings with the police and other people in the community to see what can be done in the wake of the shooting."

Keith Hellawell, the former chief constable of West Yorkshire Police, said: "It is extremely sad.

"These things happen rarely, thankfully, but when they do the whole family of policing throughout the country is in mourning.

"And I think every sensible and honourable human being will recognise the sacrifice police officers make and the potential danger they are in every day that they walk out on the streets."

Mr Hellawell, the government's former drugs tsar, told BBC News that officers responded to reports of a robbery in progress several times every day.

"This place, I was the chief of Bradford for a while, is literally a stone's throw away from the main police station in Bradford," he said.

"So access for the police would have been speedy and quite easy.

"The circumstances in which they arrived, whether they were armed or not, the police officers, as yet we don't know."

Two years ago Pc Ian Broadhurst from West Yorkshire police was shot dead in Leeds.

Former US Marine David Bieber was given a life sentence for the execution-style killing at Newcastle Crown Court in December 2004.

The last female officer killed in the UK was 29-year-old Pc Alison Armitage in March 2001 - she was run over and killed by a car thief in Oldham Lancashire.

Getting tough on gun crime
Action must match Blair's words

TONY Blair's heartfelt tribute to WPC Sharon Beshenivsky will bring much comfort to the family, friends and colleagues of the murdered police officer.
As always, the Prime Minister found precisely the right words to reflect the sense of anger felt by the whole country towards those armed robbers who shot dead the mother-of-three last Friday as she answered a 999 call in Bradford. However, Mr Blair's words will bring far greater comfort to all those who knew WPC Beshenivsky, and the public at large, if he actually delivers on his latest promise to "get tough" on gun crime.
For, given how firearm offences have more than doubled since Labour came to power with its much-vaunted crime-cutting agenda, this is an issue which has been allowed to become so serious that it will require far more than well-meaning Prime Ministerial platitudes to tackle effectively.
However, in examining what further steps can be taken, short of arming all officers or reintroducing the death penalty for police killers, the Government must ask itself why the measures taken thus far have had no discernible impact on the number, and seriousness, of firearm offences committed.
There are several reasons for this, not least the Government's lenient approach towards sentencing matters. For, while those convicted of possessing an illegal firearm, now face a five year prison term, as Mr Blair stated, the reality is that most offenders will be set free after 30 months.
However, this is not the "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" mantra that Mr Blair promised. It is the precise opposite. And, furthermore, the Prime Minister's failure to honour this pledge means more than 11,000 police officers are assaulted every year – the equivalent of one such incident every 45 minutes.
This is a damning statistic caused by the inability of the Government, and the courts, to effectively punish the criminal minority who persist in failing to treat the police with the respect that they deserve. It is too late for WPC Beshenivsky; but it is time that Mr Blair matched his words with action. His response is awaited with interest.

Tuliaserikos on mm. luvaton hallussapito...

Niinkuin edellisessä ketjussa jossa tätä asiaa käsiteltiin, niin väkivaltarikosten määrä Iso-Britaniassa putosi noin kolmanneksella vuosien 1995 ja 2004 välillä.

Ministry of Defence police to get new specialised firearm

02/03/05

The Ministry of Defence has procured a new weapon for the Ministry of Defence Police force, making them better equipped than ever for the important role they play.

A £3.4 million contract will see more than 1,500 Heckler & Koch MP7 firearms delivered to MoD Police, who provide armed security for military installations across the country, including the guarding of Britain's nuclear deterrent.

Ministry of Defence Police Officers are currently equipped with the 9mm Browning Pistol and the military-issue SA80. The SA80, a battle-proven military assault rifle, is not ideally suited for use by MoD police who are deployed in defence environments in the UK.

The pistol, which has been in service since 1979, becomes less accurate at long range and cannot defeat today's latest body armour.

Defence Minister Ivor Caplin MP said: " It is essential that these officers, who police everything from residential camps to our sensitive research and development centres, are equipped with the most suitable firearm for their jobs.

"The team at the Defence Procurement Agency carried out an exhaustive series of tests before this weapon was selected, and the MP7 proved to be the very best available.

"What's more, an innovative approach to this procurement, which sees the UK Division of Heckler & Koch look after weapon support and logistics, is estimated to save around £250,000 a year until 2008 - another example of 'smart' procurement.

"Indeed, this project has been so successful that other UK PoliceConstabularies have been paying close attention to our results, with a view to possibly using them to inform their own future firearm procurement decisions."

Tests proved that the new firearm can penetrate body armour, yet the round will not 'overpenetrate' causing a danger to bystanders. It is also light, easily maintained and simple to use and, after training, will be delivered to Ministry of Defence Police Officers across the country, replacing both the Browning pistol and the SA80.

Notes For Editors

1. The project is scheduled to achieve its In Service Date (ISD) in April - two months ahead of the estimated timing.

2. The MP7 is manufactured by Heckler and Koch of Germany. The weapon specific 4.6mm ammunition will be provided by UK manufacturer Royal Ordnance Radway Green.

3. The 'smart' nature of this project will see weapons remain under manufacturer warranty for ten years - a first within small arms procurement. The exact history of each weapon will be tracked and monitored. The expected service life is 15 years.

4. More than 1,500 systems are being procured. Final delivery from the manufacturer will be made in June 2005.

5. The Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) is the MOD's own dedicated civil Police Force of around 3,800 officers, all of them having full Constabulary powers. They provide armed security, uniformed policing and investigation of serious crime at MOD establishments and units throughout the United Kingdom. As a condition of service every officer is weapons-trained and at any one time 70 per cent of MDP officers on duty carry arms, either pistols or rifles. These are deployed at around 100 MOD sites where an armed security capability is required.

Capital gun crime rises by 50 per cent

Weapons are now fashion accessories, warns Yard

Record levels of gun crime are being blamed on the fact that more people than ever are carrying firearms as fashion accessories.

Figures published this week by the Home Office are expected to show that offences involving guns have soared by as much as 50 per cent in some parts of the country.

The greatest rises have been in the number of people found in possession of firearms and in the number of attempted murders.

Nearly half of police forces surveyed by The Independent on Sunday report a rise in gun-related offences. Those questioned include the Metropolitan, Hampshire and Bedfordshire forces.

In London, a major area of concern is still black-on-black gun crime, despite huge efforts by the Met to combat such violence. According to Operation Trident, the Met's unit combating black gun crime, offences in the capital rose by more than 50 per cent during 2005, with 164 offences recorded between April and October. This is compared with only 108 the previous year.

Operation Trafalgar, which focuses on gun crime in other communities, saw a total of 536 people arrested last year, as well as 74 firearms, 354 rounds of ammunition and 5.5 kilos of class A drugs seized.

The Met has already increased the number of stop-and-search operations it carries out in boroughs where most of the serious firearms incidents take place.

Outside London, the figures also show a disturbing rise in the use of guns. In Bedfordshire, gun-related offences have risen by 20 per cent over the past two years, from 173 in 2004 to 207 in 2005. The number of cases where people were found carrying a gun more than doubled from 19 to 43 in the same period. There was also a rise in the number of stolen firearms seized - 18 compared with one the year before.

Gun violence has more than doubled in Durham over the past year and in Dorset the number of people found in possession of a gun has increased by 150 per cent, though the force's overall gun crime figures have fallen.

There have been widespread calls for tighter gun controls in Britain in the wake of the killing of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky by an armed gang in Bradford in November. The 38-year-old died after swapping her shift so that she could be home in time for her daughter Lydia's fourth birthday.

Police chiefs have also singled out the music industry for criticism, as they claim it glamorises gun-related violence.

Last year, a music producer who had worked with the controversial band So Solid Crew was jailed for life after shooting dead his love rival.

Carl Morgan was ordered to serve a minimum of 30 years after shooting Colin Scarlett three times in a street confrontation the jury was told was "reminiscent of the Wild West".

Scotland Yard blamed the rise in gun crime not only on the fact that criminals, some as young as 16, are now more willing than ever to settle "trivial disputes" with a gun, but also on the belief that carrying firearms was fashionable.

"Clearly the Met finds this unacceptable and is determined to tackle the problem through enforcement, as well as proactive operations against the gunmen and gun suppliers," said a spokeswoman.

Soldier shot dead for his gold chain

Jan 31 2006

By Mail Reporter

A BIRMINGHAM soldier was shot dead hours after arriving back in the UK because he fought back when a mugger tried to steal his gold chain, a jury heard.

Narel Sharpe was killed as he returned home to Smethwick to jointly celebrate his 21st birthday and his mother's 40th birthday.

He was travelling back from Germany where he was based with the Queen's Royal Hussars for which he had served in Kosovo and Iraq.

He stopped to use a phone box and was approached by Levi Solomon Walker who shot him, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Walker, 26, of Edgbaston, Birmingham, has gone on trial for murdering the soldier on September 4, 2004.

Chervaun Whitehouse, 21, of Smethwick, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, are on trial for perverting the course of justice by helping to dispose of the pistol used to kill the trooper.

The youth faces an additional charge of possession of a prohibited firearm.

Anthony Barker, prosecuting, said Walker killed Mr Sharpe outside a shopping parade in Oldbury Road, Smethwick, during the early hours of the morning after trying to steal his chain.

"He (Mr Sharpe) was killed because he was wearing a gold chain around his neck and probably because he fought back," said Mr Barker.

"He was a young man, brought up in the area, left school at 16 to join the British Army, to the pride of his family."

He said Mr Sharpe had driven back from Germany to the West Midlands and stopped off at a shopping centre in Smethwick.

"It was his great misfortune to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," added Mr Barker.

"A witness heard a gun shot and looked out of the window and saw a man bending over Narel Sharpe and taking something from around his neck."

Mr Barker said witnesses recalled seeing a man fitting Walker's description bending over the man and then running away as Mr Sharpe's body lay on the ground.

Mr Barker told the hearing that Whitehouse made a false statement to the police and helped cover up what Walker had done.

"The gold chain, that was the motive for the killing, was given to Chervaun Whitehouse."

He said it was eventually pawned at a pawnbrokers by a friend.

The jury was also told that detectives found gunshot residue on the clothes of the 16-year-old.

Teen gun wars: cops swoop on 13 homes
Mar 9 2006

EXCLUSIVE by James Glover, Liverpool Echo

THE fightback against North Liverpool's teen gun gangs began today. Police stormed homes in Croxteth and Norris Green, seizing suspected gang members, drugs and airguns.

Within seconds of collecting samples from one home, officers discovered TNT explosive had been handled by people inside.

At another address, detectives discovered photographs of guns pinned to a wall along with a list of names of suspected members of the Croxteth Crew gang.

More than 100 officers from the anti-gang Matrix unit and local police raided 13 houses in Croxteth and Norris Green to collect evidence to smash the gangs plaguing the two estates.

The operation followed the joint call by the ECHO and Merseyside police for locals to speak out against the two gangs which have terrorised their neighbourhoods with a spate of shootings over drugs turf.

Senior officers have already identified at least one so-called gun "librarian" believed to be holding and lending weapons to youngsters from the age of 13 on the estates.

Some of the houses raided today showed visible damage of having been blasted in tit-fortat shootings.

Early this morning officers targeted the homes of ten suspected members of the Croxteth Crew - the gang battling it out in the area with the Norris Green-based Strand Crew.

By 9am three people had been arrested and taken in for questioning on suspicion of drugs offences and being involved in the gun gang.

More suspects were still being held and questioned by officers, who used new hi-tech equipment in a mobile station to test samples for drugs and different types of explosives.

Det Supt Geoff Sloan of Merseyside police said: "We will sustain these operations on the estates as long as we need to.

"The finding of the explosives shows that we are on the right track and that people at these addresses are either making ammunition or handling it.

"You do not expect to find TNT in the average home."

A total of 14 teenagers have been shot and injured on the two estates in the last 14 months as the drugs war has escalated from playground rows to street violence.

Anyone with information about gun crime should contact police on 0800 555 111.

* THE raids took place at homes in Totnes Road; Sceptre Road; Mansion Drive; Ampulla Road; Throne Road; Willow Way; Winhowe Road; Sovereign Road; Newdown Road; Silverwell Road; Dodman Road; Delabole Road; Middle Way.

* A KEY tool in today's raids was a £35,000 analysis machine which revealed vital forensic information within five seconds.

The machine, usually used by officers to test for drugs such as cocaine, heroin and speed, was specially-converted yesterday to expand its remit to also show traces

of TNT, semtex, nitro-glycerine or other explosive chemical compounds.

Officers took swabs from suspects' hands, clothes and homes and fed them into the analysis machine. It took just five seconds to read the sample and produce a chemical breakdown of the traces.

Guns haul found by armed police

A large haul of guns and ammunition has been uncovered by police investigating drugs and gun smuggling.
Armed police stopped a car on Monday and found a holdall containing 18 semi-automatic handguns, 18 silencers and 748 rounds of ammunition.

The operation, in Kentish Town, north London, was linked to an investigation into organised criminal networks.

Two men, aged 44 and 46, were arrested and two properties in Kilburn and Kentish Town were searched.

The men are still being questioned.

Police said it followed a major "intelligence-led operation" between the Metropolitan Police's Central Task Force and HM Revenue and Customs.

Huge weapons cache found in house

Hundreds of guns have been found in a semi-detached house in one of the Metropolitan Police's biggest ever weapons seizures.
Pump-action shotguns, M16 rifles, revolvers and antique firearms were among weapons seized during raids on three properties in Dartford, Kent.

Most were found in one house, where a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of supplying guns.

A second man was questioned in linked raids in the United States.

The UK raids were part of an 18-month inquiry into gang shootings in north London and were carried out by Operation Trident, the specialist unit which investigates gun crime in London's black community.

Most weapons, which also included automatic and semi-automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition, were found at the house, which is believed to belong to a registered gun dealer.

Detectives said some weapons may be legal, others may not.

Weapons were found in every room apart from the bathroom, mounted on walls, left on the floor, or propped up against walls.

Det Ch Supt Kevin Davis, from Operation Trident, said: "This is the biggest firearms haul we (Operation Trident) have ever had.

"The premises raided were used to store hundreds and hundreds of weapons. I have never seen anything like it.

"There are guns everywhere. It will take us at least three days to log it all and bag up the evidence."

Four guns were found at another home while no weapons were found at the third property - business premises, but police said a substantial sum of cash was found at all three.

Another suspect was held in the US state of New Jersey by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which has been liaising with the Metropolitan Police (Met).

Special Agent Rich Marianos said: "We have been, during the last eight months, working in conjunction with the UK authorities on an international weapons trafficking investigation.

"Today in the US, ATF is conducting follow-up investigative efforts in support of the UK's raid in Kent."

Police tackle internet knife gangs

By Dan Whitworth
Newsbeat technology reporter, Glasgow

Hundreds of weapons have been taken off the streets of Glasgow six months after police started using the web to crack down on gang violence.

Young trainee officers at Strathclyde Police search social networking sites for pictures of people posing with weapons, mainly knives.

Constable Holly McGee and Cadet Fraser Reed, both 18, carry out the work.

"We're looking for anyone who is brandishing offensive weapons or blades," Holly told Newsbeat.

"We take the date, the time, detail of what's in the photograph, [then] a copy of the photograph is printed out and thereafter it's all sent to the gangs task force unit."

That's when more experienced officers in the Violence Reduction Unit at Strathclyde Police get involved.

'The law's been broken'

The man in charge of this, Superintendent Bob Hamilton, says there are two ways of dealing with people once they've been tracked down.

If they were posing in a public place, like on the street or a park, the law has been broken and they'll be arrested.

Even when pictures are taken in private, though, which isn't technically breaking the law, he says the weapons are so dangerous his officers pay a visit to the people involved.

"We show the parents their pictures," he explained, "recover the weapons and make sure they know that behaviour is unacceptable.

"We have large kitchen knives, axes, samurai swords, baseball bats, a huge number and different type of weapons - in simple terms weapons that can kill."

Superintendent Hamilton says Operation Access has been a complete success.

"We've questioned more than 400 people, most of them teenagers, as part of it and it's worked so well it will carry on indefinitely," he said.

Other forces from across the UK have also been in touch about the possibility of setting up similar operations.

Social networking sites Facebook and Bebo both say they're committed to improving safety for their members as well as helping cut crime.
